SECTION 229

(1) The mayor or the deputy mayor who, for a reason subsequent to his election, no longer fulfils the conditions required to be mayor or deputy mayor, or who finds himself in one of the cases of incompatibility provided for by this law, must immediately cease the performance of his duties. (2) The minister in charge of local authorities, to whom the matter is referred by the representative of the State, shall enjoin the mayor or the deputy mayor to immediately hand over to his designated replacement without waiting for the installation of his successor. Where the mayor refuses to resign, the minister in charge of local authorities shall establish his suspension by order for a duration that he shall fix. His duties shall be terminated by decree of the President of the Republic.
